KISAC Art & Craft

We have always been fascinated by the artisans from Kisii, Kenya that make beautiful carvings out of smooth soapstone. In fact, many of their creations line our shelves in our home. Soapstone carving has been going on for generations. The artisans learned the craft their fathers, and their fathers’ fathers. They used to make purely utilitarian items and sell them to missionaries that were moving into the area. Now they make anything from soap and sugar dishes, to intricate chess sets and stunning animal figures. No one piece is exactly alike.

Take a look behind the scenes as these artists take a piece of stone and create a piece of art.
